Board Proposals and RecommendationsThe Board of Directors met in July and has three proposals for the Membership to consider at the September 23rd meeting. An Increase in the Dues to $20 per YearThe dues have not been raised since 1990. During the past few years, the Club has stepped up its recruitment, outreach and educational activities. The membership continues to grow, but so does interest in sponsoring forums, supporting political events and candidates, and expanding our involvement. The newsletter costs have also increased and now almost match the current annual dues. In order to support the increased level of activity, the Board recommends that the dues be raised to $20 per person, but to keep the dues at $10 for persons who are on a fixed income, and to establish a new category of $10 for students. Change the By-Laws to eliminate the term limit on the TreasurerMany Board members are concerned that two 2-year terms for the Treasurer can prevent a highly qualified person from continuing his/her service. Therefore, the Board recommends that the last sentence in Section 6 (a), which deals with Offices and Terms of the Officers, be amended to say: "No Officer OTHER THAN THE TREASURER shall serve more than two (2) consecutive two-year terms in the same office." The Board Proposes to Spend up to $599 to Organize Young Democrats at Towson UniversityHerb Lodder has actively pushed the Board to fund a person to help organize students at Towson University and to encourage these students to become more involved in Democratic politics in the central area. He has made contacts with the campus and recommends that we pay someone (preferably a student or someone on campus) $8/hour to organize students into a Young Democrats Club. The Board would establish a small committee to oversee that effort. We are soliciting potential organizers. Do you have someone you can recommend? Nominations for OfficersThe Nominations Committee will report its slate of candidates on September 23rd. There is still opportunity for any Member to be considered for any office. To nominate yourself or another Club member, contact Ray Suarez as soon as possible.
